How to Install Window Pet Door for Small Pets

Tiltinwindow.com: A window pet door is usually made for small animals like kittens and puppies. It’s because we usually use flaps or screen doors on it and the materials is not for animals heavier than 20 pounds.

You may already have a window opening on your balcony where your pet can enter and exit through. But it is not always that you can you leave your windows open. Burglars and other intruders can enter inside your house.

On the other hand, if you put a screen on your window, cats can figure out that they can have their way inside by crawling a hole through the screen.

They could also accidentally break your pots or vases.

To solve this problem, you may want to install a window pet door for your pet. This type of door is not only made for cats, it is also preferred for small animals like puppies. This window pet door has thin aluminum or plastic frames.

The materials are not extremely strong so it is not recommended for big animals like large breeds of dogs. They can easily be damaged if the dog going through is more than 20 pounds.

You can install window pet screen and flaps for ease of use. A window screen is also a sturdy place to attach a pet door as long as it is intended for small animals like puppies. You can install a window pet door in the screen of your window to let your pet come and go. It is a plastic door held closed usually by a small magnet.

To install a window screen mounted door, you have to cut a perfectly good window screen. If you happen to cut a hole in the top of the screen instead of the bottom, you may have to replace your window screen and start the process all over again.

To avoid this mistake, try marking the location of the pet screen door with a masking tape or use a pencil so you’ll know where is the top and bottom of your screen. This way, you’ll know where you’ll cut the screen.

Tips in installing a window screen pet door
1. Place a piece of plywood or a thick board on the ground. Lie half of the frame of the pet door on top of it.

2. Next, lay the window screen on top-half of the door and the wooden board to line the entrance in the correct position. Move the screen until the pet door lines up with the pencil marks or tape marks you made on the screen.

3. You can use the grooves from the dog or cat door all the way around the frame as a guide to cutting a door-sized hole in the screen.

4. To roll the screen in, use a screen roller to roll the edges of the cut screen into the dog frame with screen spline. After this, your gate is complete and you can now reinstall the screen.

Your pet can be easily trained to use this type of door. He will only need to push the flap if he wants to enter or exit the house. The magnet keeps the flap closed while your screen keeps the bags out even if the window is open.

Putting window pet doors in the screen just lets the pet come and go as they please so long as the window is open. With this type of pet door, you’ll never have to worry about your pets going back to your place.

Automation of Your Garage Doors

There are hundreds of garage door openers to choose from but before you can do that there are two key considerations concerning your garage door itself.

Before deciding on an electric garage door opener check that an able bodied person can effortlessly open the garage door manually as a motor will not do what they can’t.  If the door works smoothly and effortlessly, then adding an electric operator should be straight forward.

You will also need to check that your door balances at around chest height to ensure you have the correct spring tension for the operator to lift the door.  If the springs are broken or the door is not balanced properly the electric operator will not work effectively.  You may need to service the door by lubricating the moving parts or replace the door springs and other moving parts.

The other consideration is to know what type of garage door you have.  This is because it is essential for you to choose the correct device to suit your door mechanism to ensure the safe and smooth operation of your garage door.

There are four main types of garage door mechanism: retractable door, canopy door, side hinged door, and sectional door.

Up & Over – Retractable Garage Doors (Tracked)

These are identified by a single door panel with springs either side and horizontal ceiling tracks which support the door in the open position.  When the garage door is fully open, the bottom edge of the door is flush with the garage door frame

If you have a retractable up and over garage door then you are in luck, as these are ideal for automation and you can safely use any type of operator.  Your main considerations must be the noise (AC or DC motor) and the material, width and weight of the door to ensure you choose an operator powerful enough to lift the door.

Up & Over – Canopy Doors (Trackless)

This door type is not recommended for safe automation although there are options available, I would never recommend or safety and reliability.  If you don’t want to replace the entire door and mechanism you can purchase a retractable door mechanism and replace the canopy door gear.

An up & over canopy door is identified by the large spring which runs over the head of the door and when the door is open the garage door panel protrudes by approximately 600mm from the opening.

Side Hinged Doors

These garage doors can be automated using a conversion kit with most operators.  You will need to check the operator can be use for side hinged doors so that the auto-reverse safety feature functions normally.

Sectional doors

Sectional Garage Doors are identified by hinged panels that allow the door to rise vertically without swinging out as the door opens.

They are perfect garage doors for automation as no additional parts are required and you can use any type of AC or DC operator.  To ensure the operator will fit it’s a good idea to check the clearance above the door during its opening cycle then check the minimum clearance requirement for the operator as they vary.

Window and Door Problems, weather proofing

Window and Door Problems
tiltinwindow.com: Windows and doors often leak. That’s the simple facts. But, it is fairly easy to make repairs to minimize or eliminate those leaks, which will result in energy savings, as well as a more comfortable home environment. Air leaks around windows and doors can cause plenty of frustration, not to mention higher energy bills. Even gaps as small as 1/8-inch can create major air loss. Older windows and doors – or those that were not properly installed – are a major source of energy loss.If your home is fairly new, your windows and doors are less likely to leak than if your home is older. However, depending on particular practices followed during construction, even new homes can have leaky windows and doors.
Inspecting your Windows and Doors
Look around your window and door trim for cracks or other openings. Look closely at where the window and door frames meet the siding. Are there any open gaps where outside air and elements could enter the home?
Window Replacement
If your windows and doors were not installed properly or are not a good fit for the space, consider buying new ones. All the quick fixes in the world will not deliver as tight a seal as new windows and doors.  New energy efficient windows may be the way to go if you are trying to seal very old and out of date windows. While this can be a sizable investment, it can payoff in reduced energy costs and improved home values.
Resealing Doors and Windows
If you feel leaks in your house, here’s how to eliminate them.  If  you plan on chalking the doors and windows yourself you  will need the following, available at most home centers and hardware stores. Exterior caulking, get one that is recommended for windows and doors; and if you plan to paint it, be sure it is the type that is paint able. Caulking gun, small putty knife, retractable razor-knife,damp cloth, and it is good to have a bucket of water close by and a few rags. Caulk minor cracks between the window or door and surrounding trim to seal air flow. Start by removing any existing loose or failing caulking, using a retractable razor-knife or putty knife. Then, trim tip and pierce new caulking tube and place into caulking gun. Place caulking gun over the gap or joint between the window or door frame and the house siding, and gently but steadily pull on the caulking gun handle to apply an even, smooth bead of caulking around the perimeter of the window or door and within the gap. Include below the window-sill or door threshold, if accessible. Smooth the caulking with the small putty knife so it fills the gap and is flush with the two sides of the gap.To finish, wipe the newly sealed joint very gently with the damp cloth, taking care not to pull any of the fresh caulking from the gap. The bead does not need to protrude, and is probably best if it doesn’t. If you plan to paint the caulking, you must wait until it is dry, and be sure to use paint able caulking. Not all caulking is paint able and you prefer not to paint you can match the color of caulking you use to make it less noticeable. Weatherstripping for windows and doors,Weatherstripping can make a big difference in your windows and doors. You’ll need to wash the area with soap and water, then apply foam weatherstripping by peeling off the paper back and sticking it in place. (Measure the various openings to determine how thick the material should be.) Add weatherstripping in these locations. Interior of the door jam – you want movable foam or rubber around the perimeter to seal the door when it closes. The  door threshold should be  sealed,( the space between the door and floor). Check the base of window and window well, and seal as needed. Large holes should be sealed by cutting wood strips to fit the gaps or by redoing the framing around the window and door. This is a home improvement project that requires some carpentry skills to make it all look right. If you lack those skills, look for a contractor or handyman service that can do the job.
